Concept

The concert tour, planned for 2015 to 2017, will travel along the American Cordillera, the mountain ranges near the west coasts of North, Central and South America, which run from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.  The tour is divided into three parts:
1. Chile and Peru (2015) 
2. Ecuador to Mexico (2016)
3. USA, Canada and Alaska (2017)
Our project's intention is, with very flexible and adaptable concert programmes, to seek musical exchange and dialogue with musicians and audiences from different American cultures and thus to strengthen the continuation of musical and cultural diversity.
It is first and foremost the diversity of cultures, the various biospheres, that make it possible for us to experience ourselves in the midst of this vibrant and inspiring world. In this sense, the distinct music of every indigenous ethnic group is a "World Heritage Site", which has to be protected and preserved.
The concert tour will take us across the most diverse countries, cultures and biospheres. Through almost all climatic and vegetation zones on this planet, through unique ecosystems, which are characterised by an unimaginable richness of life forms. Along the Spine is dedicated to this living diversity, to the landscapes, plants and animals, which nourish and foster our lives.


Topography

The American Cordillera is, with a height of 15,000 km and breadth of 2,500 km, the longest folded mountain range in the world. It ranges from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. The Cordillera is closely connected with the Pacific Ring of Fire, a volcanic belt that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. At least two-thirds of all erupted volcanoes in the Holocene are located here. Strong earthquakes which trigger tsunamis are also concentrated at the subduction zones of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The American Cordillera forms the western part of this ring. Many of their highest peaks are indeed volcanoes, entire mountain ranges are marked by volcanic activity. They traverse almost all climatic zones of the earth, from the sub-polar regions across the temperate zones and subtropics to the tropics. They encompass areas of glaciers, tundra, coniferous or mixed forests, grasslands, and vegetation zones brimming with deciduous hardwood trees, desert areas, savanna or tropical rainforests and so traverse an immense variety of the most diverse habitats for animals, plants and human cultures. And also metropolitan areas of various sizes, for instance, Anchorage, Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mexico City, San Jose, Bogota, Quito, Lima, La Paz, Santiago and Punta Arenas are located in the midst of or at the coastal foothills of the Cordillera.


Inspiration

As great as the dimensions of this concert tour appear - a relatively small bird travels this veryroute year after year. The Arctic Tern (sterna paradisaea) breeds during the summer in the northernmost areas of the world from the subarctic boreal zones to the depths of the arctic. At the end of August, after hatching and breeding their young, the birds fly south to Antarctica (where it is summer) and spend the winter there. Part of the population fly along the west coasts of North and South America to Tierra del Fuego and continue to the far south of the Indian Ocean.
In April the birds, who grow to be around 35 cm tall and have a body weight between 85 to 125g leave Antarctica and return to their breeding grounds. During these epic journeys the birds travel somewhere in the region of 30,000 to 50,000 kilometres each year. They have the ability to sleep during the flight with one half of their brains, while the other steers and navigates.
Compared to this miracle of perseverance, instinct and sense of direction, our musical and artistic project appears absolutely realistic and feasible.


Programmes and Music Selection

For Along the Spine different pieces of contemporary and traditional music from various countries and cultures have been prepared. From this repertoire, a specific selection will be made for each concert, for each musical encounter. The respective choice of programme will be chosen according to the specific context of the concert. So it is likely that, for instance, at a contemporary music festival that we would primarily play works composed in the C21st. Yet during a musical encounter, for example, with the Q'eros in the Andes of Peru, we might place emphasis on choosing more traditional pieces or use improvisation that facilitates making music together.

New work

Additionally, especially for Along the Spine, a new composition will be created, arranged in such an open and evocative manner that its parts, rhythms and melodies are flexibly intertwined with one another, but also contain the possibility of connecting with musicians from other cultures and equally with the sounds of the environment. This forms a possible (but by no means the only) basis for musical encounters in real time, yet without the necessity that a symphony of voices and musicians sacrifice their uniqueness and characteristics in the pursuit of “overriding harmony” or a “overarching rhythm”.
Perhaps we will discover over the course of the trip a “subordinate”, inherent in different sounds and rhythms, which will links the parts and act as a foundation for the composition.
Six to eight musicians of the One Earth Orchestra will play parts for stringed instruments, woodwind instruments, keyboard instruments, percussion and vocals. We will be joined by the instruments and voices of the people, cultures and places that we encounter on our journey.
In addition to this, during the performances of constantly changing pieces of music, images of the earth will be projected.

We are hoping to get these photos from people who support Along the Spine and so canin a sense, come on tour with us via their photograph. To enable this we ask friends, acquaintances and visitors of this website to send us photos.

Along with each photo we require the photographer to kindly grant us the permission to use their image. The following formulation can be used as a template:
